Alberta Fires Appeal: Yukon NDP caucus calls for Yukon government support

As Fort McMurray, Alberta continues to fight a historic wildfire that has led to the evacuation of 88,000 people, the Yukon NDP Official Opposition caucus plans to table a motion in the Yukon Legislative Assembly today that asks the Yukon government to make a financial contribution to the Red Cross’ Alberta Fires Appeal.

“Yukoners have always had strong ties to Fort McMurray. Many of us have worked, or do work there. My brother, my sister, her husband and their family are all affected by this natural disaster,” said Yukon NDP Leader Liz Hanson. “We have a responsibility as Yukoners to do our part during our neighbours’ time of need – and that is why we’re asking the Yukon government to make a financial contribution the Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal.”

The Yukon NDP Official Opposition also encourages individual Yukoners to support the Red Cross campaign, either by texting “redcross” from their mobile phone to 30333 to make a $5 donation via their next phone bill, by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by donating online at http://bit.ly/1SXBdb0.

UPDATE: The Government of Yukon announced at 10:31 am that they plan to make a $25,000 donation to Red Cross relief efforts in Fort McMurray.
