"Unacceptable" Yukon Party government tactics stall NDP political donation reforms
Unlimited donations from corporations, unions and non-Yukoners will continue to flow into Yukon’s political system. Yesterday, the Yukon Party government stalled Yukon NDP Leader Liz Hanson’s bill to reform the territory’s political financing laws by referring it to the closed-door Members’ Services Board. The bill, titled the Fairness in Political Contributions Act, would have seen donations to political parties limited to individual Yukoners’ contributions of no more than $1,500 each year.

The Yukon NDP caucus announced today that it is using its Private Members’ Business time on May 4th to call the Fairness in Political Contributions Act, a bill tabled by Yukon NDP Leader Liz Hanson that would make important reforms to Yukon’s political financing law, for debate in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

Yukon NDP leader Liz Hanson will table the Fairness in Political Contributions Act, a bill that proposes reforms to Yukon’s political donation rules, in the Yukon Legislative Assembly later today. By ending the practice of allowing donations from unions, corporations and non-Yukoners and setting a $1,500 annual limit on an individual’s donations, the Act aims to empower ordinary Yukoners and level the playing field for all parties ahead of this year’s territorial election.
