Yukon NDP and Cystic Fibrosis Yukon Call for Coverage on Life-changing Cystic Fibrosis Drug

WHITEHORSE – Today, the Yukon NDP is bringing forward a motion to urge the Government to support Yukoners living with cystic fibrosis by providing full coverage for the drug Trikafta under the Yukon Drug Formulary.

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease that involves overproduction of mucus in the lungs and digestive system that leads to multiple respiratory complications, lower quality of life, shorter life expectancy, frequent surgeries, increased vulnerability during COVID-19 due to heightened immune-compromised status.

“Cystic fibrosis is not just fatal, it’s a disease that takes pieces of its victims’ lives – from hours of daily inhaled treatments and taking multiple oral  medications, to surgeries and weeks in hospital beds. This new drug has the potential to change so many people’s lives for the better. I urge the Government to cover it, so my son and many other can have a better, longer life. ”

– Amy Labonte, President of Cystic Fibrosis Yukon

“Trikafta has been called a “miracle drug” and “life-saving” by people living with cystic fibrosis. The Yukon NDP has been calling for coverage since the drug was approved by Health Canada. The Government needs to move on this – this will change lives, and save lives. We can’t wait any longer.”

– Annie Blake, MLA for Vuntut Gwitchin

Without coverage, the drug would cost approximately $300,000 USD per year. The Yukon NDP has a long history of supporting the fight for better treatment and coverage for Yukoners with cystic fibrosis. In October 2020, the Yukon NDP introduced a similar motion to cover Trikafta.
