YUKON NDP MARKS NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY

Today, the Yukon NDP is celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day and is honouring the contributions of Indigenous peoples of the Yukon and the world.

This year in the Yukon, the holiday is marked by the start of the territory’s first search for unmarked graves of former students at the site of the Choutla Residential School in Carcross.

“I always look forward to taking part in the celebrations of National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, but today I also reflect on the heartbreaking work being done in Carcross. We have a long road to walk towards reconciliation, both through truth-seeking and celebrations.”

– Kate White, Yukon NDP Leader

“This day is an important one for all Yukoners. As we reflect on our shared history of colonization and genocide, today is also about honoring our past, standing in unity, and celebrating the most vital elements of who we are; our families, communities, culture, languages, songs and dances, and diversity and resilience. I encourage everyone to take this day and participate in their local celebrations and ceremonies.”

– Annie Blake, MLA for Vuntut Gwitchin
