Youth Panel on Climate Change meets with Yukon NDP Leader Kate White

WHITEHORSE – This morning, Kate White met with members of the Youth Panel on Climate Change to hear their final recommendations.

“At a climate rally a few years ago, one of the most powerful and gut wrenching chants was ‘You will die of old age, we will die of climate change.’ This coming from the mouths of young people showed the fear and the truth that they are living. We are living in a climate emergency. Young people are fighting the hardest for change and I’m so grateful to see priorities that are important to us were reflected in their report.”

– Kate White, leader of the Yukon NDP

The report includes recommendations such as:

  • Recommendation 1.4: Create full scholarship for Yukon students pursuing out-of-territory post-secondary education in programs related to the green energy transition, with a condition of return-for-work period.
  • Recommendation 3.1 – Prioritize the completion of land use planning across the territory using processes that balance western science with traditional knowledge and prioritize environmental protection.
  • Recommendation 4.2: Allow First Nation governments the mandate to establish best practices for consultation.
  • Recommendation 7.3: Explore alternatives to intensity-based emissions reduction targets for the mining industry that will set a direct limit on emission.

“I am so proud of our Yukon youth for bringing forward such brave recommendations that truly challenge us as decision makers to do better. I encourage everybody to have a look at the report to understand where and how they developed their recommendations”.
