Yukon NDP calls on Yukon Government to support Mi’kmaw fisheries

Indigenous people in this country have have had to fight tooth and nail for their right to access their traditional lands and waters. Recent events in Nova Scotia are a reminder of the continuing struggles of Indigenous people, and the failure of our law enforcement agencies to adequately protect Indigenous rights.

Given these failures, and the urgent need for change, the Yukon NDP has tabled a motion in the Legislative Assembly calling upon the Government of Yukon to support Mi’kmaw fisheries by:

a) Denouncing the violence against Mi’kmaw people and the RCMP’s failure to protect Mi’kmaw communities.

b) Calling on the federal government to work with Sipekne’katik First Nation and all indigenous fishers to implement a moderate livelihood fishery.

Violence against Mi’kmaw people cannot go unanswered and our government should take a clear stance on this issue.
