Yukon NDP caucus calls Fairness in Political Contributions Act for debate

The Yukon NDP caucus announced today that it is using its Private Members’ Business time on May 4th to call the Fairness in Political Contributions Act, a bill tabled by Yukon NDP Leader Liz Hanson that would make important reforms to Yukon’s political financing law, for debate in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

Tomorrow’s weekly private members’ debate time is the first opportunity since the bill was tabled in April for the Yukon NDP to call the bill for debate.

The Yukon NDP caucus says its bill, based on existing rules adopted by other Canadian jurisdictions like the federal and Alberta governments, would strengthen the voices of ordinary Yukoners in the territory’s political process by prohibiting donations from unions, corporations and non-residents. The bill, if passed, would also create a $1,500 annual limit on an individual’s political contributions.

The Yukon Legislative Assembly will debate Yukon NDP Leader Liz Hanson’s Fairness in Political Contributions Act on Wednesday, 4 May 2016 following Question Period at approximately 2:00 pm in the Yukon legislature (2071 2nd Avenue, Whitehorse).
