Yukon NDP Leader Kate White Lauds Vuntut Gwitchin Climate Change Emergency Declaration
After the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation’s recent declaration of a climate change emergency, Yukon NDP Leader Kate White is calling on the Yukon Government to take similar action. Kate, who was in Old Crow for Caribou Days, saw first-hand the leadership and commitment to action in the face of an increasingly warming climate and a changing landscape.
“The decision of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation to declare a climate change emergency truly reflects the urgency and seriousness with which we need to be treating this issue,” said Yukon NDP Leader Kate White “That is why we will be calling on the Yukon Government to declare a climate emergency in the fall legislative sitting.”
In addition to committing to declaring a climate emergency, the Yukon NDP will be soliciting input from Yukon First Nation Governments, Yukon Municipalities, Yukon NGOs and the Yukon Public throughout the summer to hear their ideas on tangible steps the Yukon Government can take to mitigate the effects of climate change and help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
“The declaration of a climate emergency is an important step in raising awareness of the effects of climate change in Yukon” said Kate White, “We’ve seen so many instances of Yukon First Nation Governments, Yukon communities and the Yukon public showing leadership on addressing climate change and it’s time for Yukon Government to follow suit.”
